Ashley is a writer, director and acting coach.
He trained with full scholarship on the prestigious Directing MFA at Birkbeck College, University of London. This training included secondments to Drama Centre London and the Motley School of Design. After winning the Director’s Guild Award he became the resident director at the Lyric Hammersmith where he was the assistant director on various critically acclaimed productions, working closely with the artistic director Sean Holmes as well as writers such as Edward Bond and Simon Stephens. He was the associate director on the premiere of Stephens’ Morning as well as the writer and director of three studio productions.
Ashley then became staff director at the Royal National Theatre, later becoming the resident director on the West End production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time during its run at the Apollo Theatre.
After this Ashley travelled Europe and beyond, working and observing some of the most exciting rehearsals rooms in the world. This included a festival residency at the Munich Kammerspiele, a placement with Mala Voadora in Lisbon and writing a new version of Antigone for Greek and British actors in Athens. He also worked on an olive farm in Andalusia for a while before teaching at a drama school in Tenerife and then finally returning home in time for lockdown.
Since his return to London, he has worked with an eclectic mix of theatres and companies. Most importantly however, he has established Metalore Theatre Company with whom he is making new work as well as running courses built to empower new and aspiring theatre makers.
